Volcanoe Climbing & Mountaineering in Uganda

Mountaineering is a tough but rewarding activity, taking you through many vegetation zones and culminating in the peaks. For visitors who are not able to go for the peaks, shorter hikes can be arranged. Mountain Rwenzori, Mountain Elgon and the Volcanoes are the mountains most popular for Mountain hikes, Volcano climbing &Mountaineering holiday in Uganda.

Volcano Climbing (day trips from Kisoro).

The climbing is done on three extinct volcanoes and doesn’t require specialized mountain gear.

  • Mountain Muhavura (4127m) is a 12km walk and takes 8 hours hiking
  • Mountain Gahiga (3414m). Gahiga means small piles of stones and takes 6 hours to climb.
  • Mountain Sabyinyo (old man’s teeth) (3669m) is a 14 km walk and the journey takes 8 hours

Mountaineering Uganda

There are two areas where Mountain Climbing, Mountaineering & Mountain hikes can be done:-Mt Elgon and Rwenzori Mountains.

1) Mountain Elgon (6 hours from leaving Kampala & return)

The mountain has four trail heads or accessible routes (Sasa, Sipi, Piswa & Saum trails) to the peaks and doesn’t require any climbing skills or specialized equipment.

  • Sasa Trail (4 days): this route starts from Budadiri and is the closest to Mbale town & most accessible. Has the most direct route to Wagagi peak. However has a stiff climb of over 1600M on the first day, crosses the biggest bamboo area and passes the Jackson‘s pool.
  • Sipi Trail (7 days): route starts at Kapkwai (Forest Exploration Centre) a few Kilometres upstream of Sipi Falls (Out side the park). On this trail you can visit the Tatum cave.
  • Piswa Trail (7 days) Route starts at Kapkwata 30km beyond Kapchowra town and is a longer trail which starts at a higher altitude and then follows a gradual route to the peak
  • Suam Trail: This route starts at Suam village (On the Kenya border).It follows the Suam river through the steep and spectacular Suam Gorge to the hot springs. This route is long and little used.

It’s possible to vary your hike by ascending from one trail and descending to another here are possibilities and time duration

  • Ascend Sasa Trail& Descend via Sipi Trail (5 days)
  • Ascend sasa Trail & Descend via Piswa Trail (6 days)
  • Ascend Sipi Trail & Descend via Piswa Trail (7 days)

2) Rwenzori Mountains – Mountains of the Moon

Much of the Snow Capped Rwenzori Mountains can be climbed by anyone who is reasonably fit without special equipment other than good hiking boots, warm and waterproof clothing. However most of the higher peaks and certain other sections do require mountaineering equipment and previous experience.
